Thank you for the email info, Sam. Living in Strawberry and being victimized by BUI and PSWID has been aggravating and upsetting. And while health challenges keep me from meetings and most group activites, I will look forward to these emails.
I did not say that the town should control rents in town. But I do believe there is/was something the town, in its almighty wisdom, could do/have done to impress upon business property landlords to keep the leases and rent amounts within the towns "means". Instead, grossly inflated rents are charged and the owners could care less if they're vacant or not. Vacant gives them tax write-off's that otherwise could not be exercised. This has been discussed in threads of the past already.
Look, I'm not saavy in alot of things but I do know when I'm being ripped off. And paying rent for a small business suite in town under threat of the new lease contract being triple-tiered with a "tough to budget" new rent increase.... it just plain out sucks. Closing is not an option since we are successful, relocating is - but under what landlords tyranny this time. Time will tell when negotiations start this summer.
Marylou said exactly what the problem is.... rent is too high in town for retail/business space. The triple-tier method for leasing that the property owners from Phoenix charge up here is outrageous. Even the smaller plaza's are falling victim to these landlords. The town should have stepped in long ago and now it may be too late. The amount of small businesses succeeding in Payson is dwindling for many reasons. But the rent charged is tops on the list.

Gosh, let's see... why would anyone drive an hour and twenty plus minutes to work in the valley? For us, my husband does the drive because we love living in Rim Country and the commute is beautiful to drive. And... his co-workers spend as much time, if not longer, commuting on Phoenix metro freeway gridlock than he does driving from Strawberry.
When it comes to gas prices... better to drive non-stop on the Beeline than sitting in gridlock burning up gas, contributing to the brown air, and developing road rage.
I dunno... kind of a no-brainer for me. Live in shangrila commuting for work or living in hell and still commuting to work. Same time spent on the road... different conditions.
As for a bypass... I'm not convinced a bypass would benefit Payson. Maybe more police presence would help somewhat with the traffic congestion. Probably not. Then there's the visitors who insist on speeding from the casino to the light at Main Street. What part of 35mph don't they understand. Hmmm, "catch" speeders and ticket them creating revenue for the town. Sounds like Star Valley has it right on this one.
We leave the bee's alone here in Strawberry but attack the yellow jackets like there's no tomorrow. I've not had bee problems with the hummer feeders but the yellow jackets are persistant. We had to move our feeders away from the house and further into the yard. Which is a bummer because I love to watch the hummingbirds feed from our porches and windows.
No, Susan, I do not carry my SS card with me. But my MediCare card has the number on it and I need that for medical visits. And the minute I remove the card from my wallet... I'll forget to put it back for the next hospital visit. Done that more than once.
I do not see how a national identity card is going to "protect" anyone from identity theft or voter fraud. As a victim of identity fraud... no national card of any kind could have prevented what happened to me. I was already living with precautions that the state attorney generals office agreed was beyond what most folks do. So the suggestion/arguement for a national identity card in the fight against identity theft and fraud doesn't fly with me.
Basically, poop happens. And a national identity card isn't gonna keep poop from happening. I see it as one more government bungle costing millions of dollars and we'll still be in the same shape we're in today.
We already have a "national identity" program card and its called the Social Security Card. If the fed's can't keep that program in check... how do they expect to keep a national ID from being abused?
And the way I see it... The Federal government has too many liberty's in regards to my personal information. So they will not have me voluntarily sign up for this "national identity" program, card, whatever.
No, Paul, you are not by yourself in your thinking when it comes to the officers shooting Jacqui. I won't go into her personal life here but this woman has had tragedy after tragedy and it affected her in many way's. Depression took over her life and created the environment that the officers responded to.
The thing is...
Jacqui needed compassion that morning and not a bullet through the head.
