Yes, and I thought that after the biased MSM did a thorough investigation to satisfy their own scepticism after the Florida fiasco in the 2000 election, that the "legitimacy" of the outcome of that election fell into the "The issue WAS put to rest - months ago." catagory. Didn't happen then and I suspect we will keep hearing about that and Obama's place of birth for some time to come. These things take on a life of their own.
Pat, Here is one reference that I recall. Archive for Thursday, April 10, 2008 Forest Service offers free wood
For the rest, it is simply a matter of getting the $25 permit and helping yourself. The trees are already cut down and the wood in big piles. You don't even have to take a chainsaw unless you want to cut them to fireplace length in the forest as opposed to at home. Also cannot drive right to the piles most of the time so it does require some effort on the individuals part, but then that has always been the case with firewood harvesting.
Actually I read it right here on the electronic version of the Roundup. They identified the areas that wood could be obtained without permits and those areas that still require the normal permit. I could go through the time of searching the archives, but am really not into that, but will stand on the accuracy of my statement.
Pat, I agree about the "details as we know them" jump by the press. The "facts" were all out there right after the incident before a judge put the clamp down on any more information. Remember the age old axiom of the press "If it bleeds, it leads". Now hopefully this issue will be settled in the courts instead of it being tried in the public arena with pure speculation and conjecture. Even the identity of the Dad and thier friend was in the papers, as if everyone in that small town didn't then know who the juvenile was, whose name the papers couldn't publish because of his age. DUH!!!
Personally I think this is all a tempest in a teapot issue. But as with the Left's accusation that 9-11 was an inside job by GWB, these types of phoney baloney stories get their own legs and seem to stay around forever.
"Obama IS an American citizen. The fact that he will be the 44th President of the United States simply sticks in some people's craws - it certainly does in the craws of the most extreme conservatives.
Fact: Barack Obama was born on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Fact: Date of birth - August 4, 1961 Fact: Hawaii statehood - 1959 Fact: Obama's mother - American citizen Fact: Obama born to an American mother, in the United States. Fact: Barack Obama is an American citizen."
Remember that these "facts" also come from a predisposition to believe what one wants to believe, If they are in fact "true facts" then it could have been put to rest months ago without taking any of the SCOTUS's limited atention. We will see. I think he was born in Hawaii and eventually this will all go the way of Y2K.
Pat, More than once the Forest Service has said that much of the wood in the slash piles was available for the taking as long as the people didn't leave the remaining debris scattered all over in the process of taking the choice peices. Much of the firewood you have seen lately sitting in the backs of pickups with "Firewood For Sale!" signs has come from those clearing projects. There are folks up here in the Pine/Strawberry area generating a little income from doing just such as I mentioned.
It is no secret that many folks moved into this area as it has some of the cleanest air around and many, many folks have significant respiratory problems that are exacerbated by smoke from any source. It is one of those "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situations for the Forest Service. If a fire does do significant damage to one of these communities, thousands will be blaming the Forest Service for not doing enough soon enough. Been there, done that! They simply cannot win, but they will do the best they can appreciating that there will always be some segment of the population that will be negatively affected by their efforts.
Susan, "In other words, if the boy did shoot and kill, it was not premeditated."
Not looking to get into a semantics debate, but if it was not "premeditated" then the only other option would be that it was accidential. It is said the .22 he used was a single shot which required him to reload several times to shoot his Dad 4 times and the other guy 4 times. Now, accepting that the "child psychologist " said he was incapable of "planning" the crime, what does that same person say about the boy's execution of the crime. Unless the kid was on autopilot, he must of at least of had to think about the necessity to eject each fired case and physically insert another round, aim at another human being (his Dad no less), and pull the trigger. Not just once, but 8 times from the report thats out there. As I said in the previous thread, it is tragic to the enth degree, but something is seriously wrong in our society and continueing to make platitudinal excuses for these kinds of acts may very well be one of the causitive factors. And as you might expect I am not buying into the claim that it is because there are so many firearms arounfd now days. For decades young 8 years old have been shooting and hunting and there were not many of these types of incidents that records would show as factual. Sad indictment on us all!
I know Tom doesn't need me to come to his defense, but you Leeta should lighten up a bit on the acrimony. Tom was merely expressing an opinion as we all do on this forum, even you. That his thoughts don't feel all warm and fuzzy to you takes away absolutely nothing from the sincerety of his views. In case you haven't been paying attention, the news is full of articles regarding an increase in threats and hate crimes directed at the president elect. That's the reality of it and if you can't find the gumption to face facts, then tune out why don't you?
Tom, Have to agree with Susan as I did not read any more into her post than the main gist, we cannot be proud of those who would go outside the law to show their displeasure with the president elect. President Bush and everyone else on the right has taken a severe hammering from the hate mongers on the left over the last 8 years. Heard so much hypocracy it made me want to hurl, ie. I support the military but not their mission, I respect the office of the POTUS but not the person elected to that office, etc.
Like you and so many others, Bush lost my support for a myriad of reasons but I never refused to acknowledge that he was the duly elected POTUS. Mr. McCain likewise lost me when he felt it in his political interests to sacrifice this nation' sovereignty by pandering to the US Chamber of Commerce and the Open Borders factions.
Mr. Obama will get the same deserved respect regardless of how much I may disagree with his socio/political ideology. Those in his party who so flung their hatrid and vitriol around over the last 8 years may get some of that back in spades as they try to rewrite their motives. The nation is still pitifully divided and I don't really expect someone raised in the Chicago Political Machinery will be capable of bridging that divide. I will not help him further his agenda with any support at all nor will I do anything outside the legal political process while trying to stop that agenda. If those who believe as I do end up on the short end of the stick, well God Bless America! He did for over 200+ years but as America leaves it's Judeo/Christian roots, He may find it in His will to cease with those blessings. We will see.
