The honest best man did win. There are not enough realtors and developers in town to make Kenny win by that much. Payson knows who is the best man. We always reap what we sow and so it is with Edwards.
Being "honest" means admitting when you decided to run, why you decided to run, and who convinced you to run. "Special Interests" groups own his butt now. He better make good his promises to them. Houses better start selling like crazy, businesses better start opening again, Senior Citizens better start getting free Health Care, schools better get better grades and more students enrolled.
I am relieved at the result but to point to Realtors and developers is exactly the kind of skewed politics that voters are turning against throughout the country this year. Payson in recent times has been notorious for one term mayors. Our last two term mayor was Vern Stifler. This is a tough place to get a second term as mayor.
If you look at the broader picture in this country, particularly with regards to the presidential campaign, Payson merely reflected what voters all across the country are saying: we're tired of negative politics.
Realtors and developers were also behind Barbara Brewer. As I recall, she wasn't re-elected.
I think that you had a perfect storm of things come about this election. The gas bills probably didn't help Edwards and there were some other things. In many respects it's a credit to him for it to have been as close as it was and clearly Kenny has some reaching out to do. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are some Realtors thinking they made all the difference, but other than their vote I'd disagree. You have just under 300 active Realtors in the CAZBR, many of whom may work in Payson, but some of whom don't live in Payson. We're not that big of a power group. We're not a group that you could say "don't cross them or you could have trouble." Plus, we have divisions too - don't think that every member of our board is thrilled with this water campaign being conducted right now.
Yes, Tim, I am sure you are relieved, aren't you a Realtor? Mayors should have a four year term. It is hard to do your work the second year when you are fighting the wolf pack off your back.
Mayor Edwards is a good mayor and accomplished things that needed to be done.
The gas bills have to the stupidest issue to be thrown in and cloud the election on who will be the best Mayor.
Town of Payson water dept. sometimes go over 30 or 31 days or estimate thier bills. So what is the big deal that the gas company went over because of sickness. You don't just pick someone off the street to read a gas meter because your employees are sick. If all the people had electric heat they would gripe about APS over charging them. Payson doesn't allow wood stoves or fireplaces to be put in housing so either pay the gas bills, electric bills or go after the Town.
Tim, not just Realtors, add contractor, developers, and the church. I'm NOT saying the church told their members who to vote for, and I'm not saying all members voted for Evans, but I imagine he had a lot of support from most members, and the church has a large membership.
Then there are those that bought into the "I'm just an old farm boy" routine, and to a certain extent, maybe his Holier Than Thou attitude swayed some people. For some reason, a lot of people believe an upstanding church member could not possible do wrong. And could not possibly make mistakes. (I'm not one of them.)
Thankfully it's over. Simple fact about elections, there is one winner, and one loser. But in this case, I think our community lost a good man, and a great mayor, and two people that had lots of talent and qualifications.
Pat & Dean I knew the two of you would be sore losers.Pat I heard you on the radio this morning and I thought you were trying to cause problems. Haven't you ever worked a election?I have worked quite a few for the county, none for the city as I don't live in the city limits, but now the city does their own thing and doesn't have to send much to be verifed. The remark kinda sounded like you didn't trust the city to count and verify names.Sylvia is a very competent town clerk. It seems like the peolpe have spoken, and you and Dean will just have to live with it. Pat, I don't undrrstand your mistrust of the realtors. You and Mert worked at that in Mesa for years. The only reason I can see for it is there more of them them most others and maybe its a small bit of jealousy. Any way I.m glad Mr Evans got in. Hes got to be a lot better then the one we've had, and now Dean will come down on me as I don't know anything,as I'm a old timer and according to a lot of the people in this town we're the ones causing all the trouble. At least a lot of us on this thread(or what ever you call it)seem to agree.
Marylou, I am the only one on this forum that has ever said anything nice about the Town Clerk, Sylvia and the people that work in the clerks office, so don't try to start any s--- about me saying anything bad about her. Don't put words in my mouth. I know exactly what I said.
Just a few days ago I posted something about the Clerks office being the best office in Town Gov.
The county verifies the signatures not the Town Clerk.. If you have worked so many elections you should know that. If you had been listening for Dan's answer you would have heard him say that they were sent to Globe for verification.
I don't support Kenny because I'm a Realtor. Believe me, I don't trust all Realtors and developers either and take a very pragmatic approach about things there, though I wish people locally would stop making us out to be the devil.
The two things I tend to zero in on when it comes to candidates are character and business beliefs. Everyone I've talked to regarding Kenny has nothing best of things to say about the man and it has sounded to me like he has worked very hard to get where he's at. On the business side, I don't expect Kenny to work miracles but I do perceive him as more pro-business and that is important to me.
On the church - you still have to be a good person and carry yourself in a certain way for folks to vote for you. And if you've been at all devious, your own folks are gonna call you on it and not vote for you.
On the gas issue, you certainly make a case on that. It's too bad that with the mail in vote we don't have exit polls - it'd be really interesting to see what kind of role that played.
And Pat, I also assume that you're in favor of four year terms for folks serving in the U.S. House of Representatives?
Marylou, here's the way it works: You say something, and I respond. Or I say something, and you respond. If I respond to you it does not mean I'm "coming down" on you. It means I am answering you, and if I don't agree, I say so.
I don't agree, OK? And I'm not a sore loser, I am just very disappointed that Kenny Who got elected. I don't see him in the same golden light his supporters do.
And, in my opinion, it didn't really matter who ran against the mayor, Evans or Gartner, or someone else, the people that dislike Mayor Edwards would have voted for his opponent regardless of who was running against him, they just wanted him gone. (In my opinion)
And boy are you way off base about Pat trying to cause problems this morning. You should be ashamed of yourself :)
Pat it just sounded to me that you didn't trust them.I know Sylvia is a good clerk, along with her help.Don explained how they do it now with all the electric stuff.I didn't put words in your mouth, as I just said it sounded to me that you didn't trust them, because your man lost.He has caused more trouble among families and friends over this,I know of several that are not speaking to one another over this, which I think is pretty stupid. Another thing on one of your threads on Garretts, you said you couldn't have fireplaces or wood stoves in Payson. You can have them as long as they are EPA approved, along with the instilation. Haven't you listened to Obama? We all need change, thats why he got voted out/If you agree to that about Obama on the change thing,Ill tell you another.
The time gremlins are at it again. The times on these are a hr off.By my clock it is only 4:45.I figured the sore loser would get a rise out of both of you
Marylou,I think NAYSAYER is a more appropriate discription for some above. As for Obama, he represents HOPe. Examples of his hope> I was mostly absent during any relevant senate votes, hope they dont' check. I hope hilary gets a yeast infection before the convention. I hope no one finds out about my meetings with Elija Muhammed louis Farakhan. I hope my wife keeps her mouth shut from now until after the convention. I hope the voters don't ask me to explain what I mean by change from what to what. I hope Ted Kennedy stays sober during our next photo op together.....
You are allowed pellet stoves and old wood stove and fireplaces that are grandfathered in but I am almost sure you can not have a new wood stove or fireplace now. I think the town has also had some no burn days.
Mayor Edwards did not cause the trouble. It came with the job when he took over the Mayors seat. It was already there and getting worse. He cleaned up some of it but I will never convince you of that so am not going to try. It will all go back to where it was when Brewer was mayor. The good ole group will tell him what to do, but he will do it with more finesse, if he can keep his place on the agenda during meetings.
Don That is one of the best ones i have heard.I take it your not to fond of him either.I would hate to be in Evans shoes. The Edwards people & you know who they are,are not going to give him the benfit of the doubt. While listening to the radio this morn almost everyone that called in were glad he got the job.It sounded nice to hear some nicer things about him. .Its a shame about the other two men. They both seem nice and one of them had some highway experienceThey might have stood a chance if they didn't seen to be on the same ticket as the mayor. On the stoves, why are the stores still selling them?In the 25yr we've been back I have never heard of a no burn day. They have them in the valley a lot in the winter.I just don't see how they could force you have gas or electric.Thats basic communism.
We are not supposed to have spas either , but the town issues business licenses for out of town dealers to sell them when they have the big RV sales in the parking lot. Maybe the stoves are being placed in homes outside the town limits. I remember one no burn day when we first moved back to Payson. I believe the nurseries sell grass seed and we can't have lawns in the Town limits.
Marylou, Have you ever heard of stacking the deck? Radio calls.
As for your remark about Mayor Edwards people not giving Evans the benefit of the doubt? What doubt? What do you mean?
What breaks did Evans/Brewer people give Mayor Edwards? I think the day Mayor Edwards won the last election the back rooms started filling to get rid of him.
Here is the best question, why didn't Evans run against Brewer if he has all this knowledge and connections he is going to use now? Why not 2 yrs. ago???
Found out who was all about? Edwards or Evans? With Evans it will go back to the Brewer and Schum days. One group leading and the mayor following and no regular citizen input on paper or at council meetings.
How come no one ever answers any questions I ask about Evans or anything else?
Full of sarcasm about the Mayor but no answers on the other things.
Pat How can you say that about Kenny Evans? You have no idea how he will conduct his meetings or anything else No one answwers you because most people don't know enough about him and his politics. No body knew any thing about Edwards either and he still got elected.Give the guy a break. You and Dean never answer us aout all the wonderful things Edwards has done
Chief Gartner and Glenn Smith had been planning on retirement before Mayor Edwards was elected. Gordie was counting down the days. The airport manager should never had been hired. I am not saying they didn't need a manager but not him !
I have noticed a happier looking staff in the last two years, but of course I go into the town offices more than people that live in Oxbow Estates.
i was talking about town manager, human resource person and glenn old job she took .and then ran all 3 and now they are looking for a replacement for her old job , but the human resource person gone. and by the way i talk to towns working people and , you will not belive me because i live at oxbow estates o well you seem to know it all, but you still have not said what he has done? o well.... I get all my info off the web site and i am getting the info on woodburnig stoves and pellet stoves i will put it on here when i get, got some of it you can have a fireplace in a new home as long as it is epa approve, you just can not have this as your only heat ,
Stevie, (: I stand corrected on the fireplaces and stoves. go to Town Code 150 Building regulations 150-27 It tells all about them. What I was going on was when my son had his house built they would not let him have a wood burning fire place and not to long ago, my daughter had work done on her house and wanted to put a wood stove in the fireplace and they said no. Guess it was of those selective ordinance enforcement things. Another thing when Vernon had his house built we wanted to put a cargo storage there untill his house was done to store his belongings in. They told me no way. But Chief Gartner put one in about a week later and now they are being used as permanent storage buildings all over town.
Steve, here is just some of what Bob Edwards has done:
Through Bob’s leadership these are some of the things he got implemented.
Started Affordable Housing taskforce which evolved into Affordable Housing Commission.
Started Design Review Board.
Eliminated requirement of developments over 20 units to bring their own water.
Saved the town $40 K as a result of the implementation of a new recycling plan
Increased street budget 37% over last council
Obtained citizen input for goal planning.
Implemented a new street sign policy.
Implemented a new ethics policy
Initiated an alternate route strategy. Started working with ADOT to get the route in their planning process
Got the PATS trail system going.
Increased impact fees to come more in line with what building costs the town.
A “do no harm” policy over the Tower Well.
Town policy regarding hiring of illegal immigrants
Solved Ash St. drainage problems
Tightened up the drainage requirements for new developments
Identified a growth plan that can be sustained with out current water.
Identified ways to pay for Blue Ridge without impacting current residents.
Acquired new finance software
Developed a new image for Payson-now in use on marketing documents
Hired a Tourism and Economic Development director. Reorganized dept to emphasize.
Involved citizens in many activities previously performed by paid consultants
New fence ordinance
Reduced spending and developed a rainy day fund.
Citizen identified idea for silent witness program implemented.
Eliminated 3 minute speaking limit at council meetings
Improved access of key information to the town website. Goal status, development status. Citizens no longer have to pay to see the data
Town website improved to track issues/ideas a citizen raises.
OK Steve and Marylou? That's just some of the wonderful things Bob Edwards has done. Since you keep asking "what has he ever done", I guess you just weren't paying attention.
steve dean 1 affordable housing, still no affordable housing where is it 2. there has been one here, this drove the cost up just for looks 3 now they can make it harder for a developer to do anything because they can add what ever they want and if he or she says no then no houses the ones on tyler parkway 4 they have been working on that from the beging for it would pay for it self 5 street budget when you cut staff and not give as much to the nonprofit then you can put the money anywhere 6 no one listens and it takes to long 7 now the a-frames are fine and yard sale signs 8 not real good 9 the bypass has been in the works for a very long time if a town does not push to get it done or put up money it is real slow 10 romance got it done the trails were started before and are fine but don't make the developer put out the added cost for small piece that hooks to nothing added cost 11 this has slowed down the housing now alot more cost, use it for blue ridge, fine but when the cost went up now not many new housing starts so now who will pay 12 still fighting over that no trust 13 they are still here and have not heard of one going to court 14 maybe 15 more cost to developer and no new development started 16 no growth 17 new housing new people to pay no new housing and the gila county residence that do not live in payson should not have to help i will never see it at oxbow 18 should be up dated any way 19 we all ready had one the elk and the rim 20 what a joke drive through town 21 paid people work better when you spend money you will keep it going and get it done free no cost don't have to do it so it will get put back tell another day 22 been trying to do that for a long time still had a orange fences 23 when you cut thing you save , name change 24 all you had to do is call 25 that was never inforced that much anyway 26 computer are great 27 computer are great
no growth i guss is good no work must be good bussness going out must be good schools are getting smaller must be good working person has to leave
you will not agree with this but this is what i see from outside looking in
Looking in from the outside and living at oxbow to you towns people, we know nothing. we know more than you think and you can say what ever you want and i will reply and tell you what i know or not. i can go on and on i do know a lot of people and here a lot about whats happen in town
Multiple times on the Blog comments were made that people say that Edwards has done a lot but won't say what. So Dean responds with some of the things that were accomplished during the last 2 years. Seems like an impressive list to me. We should each question ourselves as to what we have accomplished in the last two years? Can we come up with such an impressive list? It is easy to complain and make negative comments but actually accomplishing things takes a lot of effort.
Marylou, The dept. heads are the ones that needed the new computers. Mayor Edwards has probably never used one at Town Hall. If you would bother to go to the Corporation Commission web site and look up the financial records of most of the non profits, they should be giving money to the town. One year Time Out took in over $600,000. at the one store and paid out over $300,000. to employess not counting Drs. or any health care. Who are the employees that are geting these wages and where are the volunteers that are said to be doing all the work? There are many houses built on Rim Club parkway and more under construction. Also on N. Tyler Parkway. The rest of your items I don't understand. REMEMBER THE MAYOR ONLY GETS ONE VOTE OUT OF SEVEN OR HE MAY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO MORE THINGS TO HELP THE TOWN.
In my opinion, the Payson PD probably has no problem with this kind of thing. I think they dislike Mayor Edwards, and could care less if one of their own puts something like this on a public forum. And considering David goes to the same church as Kenny Who, they are probably ALL in favor of this kind of stuff. It just confirms my opinion that just because you go to church, doesn't mean you are all that nice.
If I remember it right, when officer Vaughn was posting quite regularly he said he had permission from higher ups in the Police Dept. This was before Chief Engler I think.
Go back and read his 70 posts, you wouldn't know he wasn't a civilian in some of them. I couldn't find the one about him saying he had supervisors ok to post. I may have missed it but don't think so. I wonder what happened to it if it is gone. Maybe that was why that part of the forum was missing about a week. They were purging some of it?
Captain Phudd, Calm down, you didn't have time to read them all. Gee, I'm getting better, I can make people upset and they don't rant at me personally. Don't you ever sleep?
I am not a crazy old woman that sits up untill almost midnight posting to my self. I was responding to another person who it seems the Roundup has decided to remove his posts, and name. Al Poskanzer. Maybe they should go back and read Officer Vaughns and remove some of them.
You want to hear something strange? Dr. Al can see his posts from his computer, but we cannot see them from ours, neither can his wife, who is in another town. How can that be?
Goldplay, They brought in the BIG GREMLINS this weekend. (:
I may get kicked off but it seems the police dept runs the blog. The last post of mine that was taken off was about the veternarian being shot. There were others after mine that stayed on and said about the same as I did.
I guess you, Al, and I have a wrong attitude or the wrong way to express our thoughts.
Oh if I could only post how I really feel in my own way. No holds barred !

Looks like the Realtors and developers did it again.
Maybe passing the hat is what wins elections.
Not the best man!

Chief,
Why are you defending his honesty already, I didn't call anyone dishonest.
Passing of the hat so there is no real record of who put up the $$$$.
Not a good start with where our town money may come from or go to!
Now lets see if he can really come thru with all the connections he claimed to have.
Hope the halo doesn't slip and choke someone.

Pat,
Your initial statement is true in more than one election!!!
Now the hard part begins for them. They have to put their "plan(s)" into effect.
See you around and keep truckin'. Eventually truth will out.

Marylou,I think NAYSAYER is a more appropriate discription for some above.
As for Obama, he represents HOPe. Examples of his hope>
I was mostly absent during any relevant senate votes, hope they dont' check.

Don
That is one of the best ones i have heard.I take it your not to fond of him either.I would hate to be in Evans shoes.

Stevie, (:
I stand corrected on the fireplaces and stoves.
go to Town Code 150 Building regulations 150-27
It tells all about them.

Now, get over it.

steve
dean
1 affordable housing, still no affordable housing where is it
2. there has been one here, this drove the cost up just for looks
3 now they can make it harder for a developer to do anything because they can add what ever they want and if he or she says no then no houses the ones on tyler parkway
4 they have been working on that from the beging for it would pay for it self
5 street budget when you cut staff and not give as much to the nonprofit then you can put the money anywhere
6 no one listens and it takes to long
7 now the a-frames are fine and yard sale signs
8 not real good
9 the bypass has been in the works for a very long time if a town does not push to get it done or put up money it is real slow
10 romance got it done the trails were started before and are fine but don't make the developer put out the added cost for small piece that hooks to nothing added cost
11 this has slowed down the housing now alot more cost, use it for blue ridge, fine but when the cost went up now not many new housing starts so now who will pay
12 still fighting over that no trust
13 they are still here and have not heard of one going to court
14 maybe
15 more cost to developer and no new development started
16 no growth
17 new housing new people to pay no new housing and the gila county residence that do not live in payson should not have to help i will never see it at oxbow
18 should be up dated any way
19 we all ready had one the elk and the rim
20 what a joke drive through town
21 paid people work better when you spend money you will keep it going and get it done free no cost don't have to do it so it will get put back tell another day
22 been trying to do that for a long time still had a orange fences
23 when you cut thing you save , name change
24 all you had to do is call
25 that was never inforced that much anyway
26 computer are great
27 computer are great
no growth i guss is good
no work must be good
bussness going out must be good
schools are getting smaller must be good working person has to leave
you will not agree with this but this is what i see from outside looking in
have a nice day

Multiple times on the Blog comments were made that people say that Edwards has done a lot but won't say what. So Dean responds with some of the things that were accomplished during the last 2 years. Seems like an impressive list to me. We should each question ourselves as to what we have accomplished in the last two years? Can we come up with such an impressive list? It is easy to complain and make negative comments but actually accomplishing things takes a lot of effort.

where the afforable housing and most is normal town doing
Posted by patrandall (pat Randall) on March 14, 2008 at 10:28 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Marylou,
The dept. heads are the ones that needed the new computers.
REMEMBER THE MAYOR ONLY GETS ONE VOTE OUT OF SEVEN OR HE MAY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DO MORE THINGS TO HELP THE TOWN.

these are not the affordable housing they are on the high end most are going in allready started development.

And David, our community didn't win, they lost :)

If I remember it right, when officer Vaughn was posting quite regularly he said he had permission from higher ups in the Police Dept. This was before Chief Engler I think.

He has posted 70 times.

I am not a crazy old woman that sits up untill almost midnight posting to my self.
I was responding to another person who it seems the Roundup has decided to remove his posts, and name. Al Poskanzer.
Maybe they should go back and read Officer Vaughns and remove some of them.

Goldplay,
They brought in the BIG GREMLINS this weekend.
