I'm still looking at the financial report in the Roundup, and I am just amazed at the Kenny Evans campaign. $25,000.00 ?? Evans has raised over Twenty Five Thousand Dollars?? "They" must really want this bad. But this is Payson folks, is any local political office worth $25,000.00??
I wonder if any of those "donors" that contributed to Kenny Who's campaign have ever donated anything to Marcy's Community Kids, or the Senior Center, or Humane Society, or any of the other struggling non profits?
What has happened to our community priorities? Why is the Payson Mayor's seat so important that it's going to cost $25,000.00 to replace the current mayor?
And when is Kenny Who going to admit planning a campaign to unseat Mayor Edwards began months ago, as far back as October of last year, maybe even before that? And when is he going to admit who is behind him, who is supporting him, who is spending TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS?
I will be so glad when this election is over.I cannot believe all the whining that is going on,just because Mr Evans is spending more money than Mr Edwards.More power to him,I happen to know some of the people that are behind him, and they are not from the good ole boys.Maybe we need "just an old farm boy" to keep some of the things that this counsel,is getting rid of.Nothing has been done to the rodeo, grounds,(cover, bathrooms etc) as they are waiting for someone else to finish all this. When the rodeo is completely gone from from Payson, because of lack of help for it,that can be the mayor and counsils legacy. The roads that he has done is another myth. We have drove around town and there are maybe two or three. The road from the cemetry to the airport is a disaster. The only difference is now the pot holes are filled in.The Mud Spprings and the one by St Phillips are to early to talk about. You can't blame LaRon Garrett,as he can only do so much with the funds he is given. Am still waiting to see what happens with the orange fence property.Have to blame that all on Home Depot as they are a big co.Can't blame the people that have lived there for yrs,as these days no one has to take responsibility for their actions, you just blame some one else. I'll quit now as this might get removed, since I have mentioned a few names, but its all my opinion,
Mary Lou You are so right. It looks like a lot of people really like Kenny. Most of his donations have come from everyday citizens. It also looks like many people have had dealing with Edwards. As I said before people are starting to find out about him. It does not take long to see through him. Kenny has not had to run with two other people to pool their money in hopes of stacking the council. I will be glad also when the election is over so some folks can find something else to whine about. You and I know they seem to have an unlimited supply when you see something wrong in everything. If Edwards would wear a white belt and white shoes he would be a great used car salesman. Ha
Not long ago, Edwards made it a point to meet with town employees from all departments (excluding dept heads). During one of his meetings which I attended, he made it known to us 3 different times, that he has no idea what he is doing as Mayor of Payson, and neither do the Town Councilors. I've often wondered about those comments.
I was also thinking about the task forces which have been created, in discussing the innumerable needs to this community, as well as some of Edwards repeated refusals regarding those task force recommendations.
When those two segments are enjoined, seems to me a picture forms regarding Edwards' abilities.
There have also been some comments around town about stacking the town council. Recently, I was forwarded an e-mail from Edwards' own hand, dealing with a 3rd candidate. The e-mail is below:
"Third Candidate... I have been asked about a third vote for Council beyond Dave Rutter and Tom Loeffler.
John Wilson... is publicly supporting Kenny. I enjoy serving with John but we are on the opposite side of most issues.
Rick Croy and Mike Hughes... have come out opposed to the 250 limit on building permits so they and I are on opposite side of this key issue.
So I find it difficult to suggest any of the three."
Edwards explains that his intentions are to:
"My goal is to unstack the Council and add councilors who are independent, business thinkers and who will not be controlled by special interest groups."
In my dirt clod mind, why does Edwards feel the need to "add" councilors who have similar belief structures as himself?
As I've already mentioned many threads ago, I am concerned when candidates align themselves with others who share similar attractants. The mere appearance of inpropriety is a warning sign to me.
Very good point David. You and I both know why he wants all the votes on his side. Then he can say the council voted for it which would really mean they voted my way.
So he says he does not know what he is doing (several of use figured that out before he admited it) but appoints Task Force Groups to help him. But then he will not listen to them.
David, what about Tim Fruth recommending Andy Romance to fill a vacant seat on the council? Did you consider that an impropriety? Or any of the many other appointments made on any of the committees in our town. There is always someone recommending someone, because they are a friend or because they think they will do a good job. I see nothing improper about Mayor Edwards wanting qualified people on the council or on committees. Seeing that as an impropriety seems a bit of a stretch. But I certainly understand how you come to that conclusion, being on the Payson PD and all that.
Hinton, just because someone is on a task force doesn't mean all of their recommendations are perfect. And when are you going to quit whining about the task force you were on? They hired Don Engler didn't they?
Dean I am not whinning about by task force but several others had the same problem. Yes and Don is the Chief and that is great. However it took Edwards two groups of citizens to select Don and a group of other citzens questioning the applicants and scoring them before he could see what we had investigated for 8 months. If he had said from day one that they were going to advertise for a Police Chief then there would have been no reason for us to spend a lot of time on that portion of the task group. The way he handled it cost the city money for no reason. My task force is a very small part of the problems that Edwards has. To bad you have bought into Edwards used car salesman's pitch.
I don't know if any of the people that gave to Evans campaign give to the non-profits or not, but I do know that Kenny Evans said he had never heard of Community Kids untill he was introduced to Marcy not long ago. He has lived here 10 years and never heard of Marcy Rogers and the Payson Community Kids?????
Shovelhead, I heard of Marcy's kids when she was working for the Town when I first moved back here. She has been in the newspapers, on the radio, and national TV. Mr. Evans seems to be such a do gooder and helps get everything done, I thought it strange he had never heard of them.
Has anyone on here gone to the Town and picked up a copy of the financial reports the candidates had to have in the 28th to see who the contributors were?
I wish the newspaper would publish the Financial Reports filed by the candidates - if nothing more than those who give cash or "in kind" contributions over $25. That would give a better picture of those who are backing each candidate. Most folks can't take time to go to Town Hall and read the reports or pay to get printouts of them and it is as piece of information that tells a lot about where the candidate is coming from.
I certainly hope that none of the churches are getting involved in politics - that would be a bad situation and could well cause a real divide in the town. Many people would be resentful and bad feelings would result.
Dean, You have a short memory. During the last election, according to The town of Payson records, Edwards outspent Brewer 11,185.50. Edwrds, Blair, and 3 other packs collected $44,992.24. Brewer, and 1 pack collected $33,806.74. The total amount spent by all candidates was $123,397.00, a staggering amount for a small town. This broke all spending records for elections in Payson. It makes Kenny Evans amount of $25,000 look very small in comparison.
Who are the people supporting Kenny? The $25,000 + collected is from over 600 contributors, some as low as $20. Also, Kenny is running alone, and is his own campaign manager.
I donated to Kenny's campaign, and 17 local charitie last Year. So what?
Kenny did not decide to run for mayor until close to the deadline to turn in the documents, and begin gathering signatures
Why don't you ask Bob Edwards why he, Blair, and their packs spent what they did to buy the Mayors, and Council chairs two years ago?
The difference in this campaign is obvious. Edwards has lost support of the people who backed him before, which relates to the amount of funds he has collected, which relates to the amount of votes he will get. I beleive a great President said, "You can fool some of the people some of the time, but, not all of the people all of the time"
Gordon, If Mr. Evans is his own campaign manager, he knows exactly who is giving him money... Does he think we are all idiots?
Ruby, I know a lot of people think the LDS (Mormon) church has the Bishop stand up and say, "this is who to vote for." Not so! I know members of the church who like me absolutely will not vote for him. Religion is not a reason to vote for someone and should not even be thought about. It seems it is only the Mormons and Catholics that this happens to. I'll bet not many people have a clue what church the present council and Mayor attend, or what church the other candidates attend.
Pat I am a member of the Mormon Church and you are absolutely right. The church does not try and influence any member. I have seen Mormons I would not vote for.
Gordon....you and Don Crowley have tried over and over to misrepresent the facts regarding the fund raising of the last campaign. You contine to say the Committee for Community Based Growth used it funds to support a candidate. This is not true and you know it. Those funds were used for legal and administrative costs to complete the referendum against the Tower Well. No matter how many times you misrepresent the facts it will not make them true.
Gordon, I do have a short memory. And I don't believe half of anything you say, but the point I was trying to make got lost in all of this dialogue.
Our community priorities are screwed up. More money is spent trying to become mayor of Payson than goes to things that need it the most. I think something is very wrong here, I don't care who it is raising the money. It seem Town politics is more important to some people than it should be.
Power, Ego, and Revenge. A good title for a book isn't it?
Oh, and about the Mormon Church, I agree with Pat, they don't tell people how to vote, but it is a large voting block with a lot of support for Kenny Who, and you can't just ignore that fact.
Dean & Pat I dont know how many times you have told me I am missing the point. What is the point?I have lived here a lot longer then you have, and I just dont see a point that I'm missing, regarding Edwards. Pat I didn't hear about Marcy's Kids for a long time and I have been back 25yrs,and no my heqd is not buried in the sand. What difference does it make if he donates to some of these organizations?Thats his business, and if he did disclose it, the whiners would have something else to gripe about, because he gave to much to one and not the other.I also agree with Chief & David.Edwards has aligned himself with the other two( notice all the signs )If they get in he will have a super majority along with Mr Blair, and wont that be just dandyAnd Dean, its private money so what makes you think they will use any of it to better Payson.?Are you going to spend your own private money to help Payson,I'm sure not going to.Thats what the taxes are for. You guys need to get a life. P.S. Also noticed two more stores are going out of business. Hows that for no new growth? One stated in the paper that with the slow down of building her business, had took a big hit. Now I wonder who slowed down the buillding?
If I had been going to vote for him, the ad I just heard on the radio would have stopped me in my tracks. Good grief "vote for this ole farm boy." Don't try to be something you aren't. Sounded like something Jethro would have said on the Beverly Hillbillies. Cutesy doesn't cut it. Worse than patting yourself on the back all the time.
Marylou, I think the question was did the people that contribute to Evans give to the non profits. They weren't asking if he did.
Marcy's kids weren't here when you came back 25 years ago.
There are some houses in different stages of construction right off McLane south of Longhorn and the contractor just walked off. He had the permits why didn't he finish them? Any answers to that one? Construction hasn't stopped. Come up one day and I'll drive you around. Prices are to high for anyone to buy. When you have to pay $246,000 for a double wide manufactured home, with a yard just big enough to walk around the house, now that is expensive.
Put the blame where it belongs, high impact fees, the developers and contractors I can say that as my son and grandsons are building contractors.
How many consignment stores, antique and junk shops can a town of 15,000 support?
Chief, If I was like many of the other people on here, I would ask that your post ending with the crack about used car salesmen be removed. My father inlaw and his brother had the first Ford car dealership in Payson in 1932. Went on to Mesa and had a very succesful and honest car dealership. I am sure Chapman and Coury do not appreciate the remark either. Weren't you taught not to lump people together? Kinda like saying all mormons are going to vote for Evans !
Marylou, I explained my POINT in the my 8:03 post, spelled it out in detail. If you can't figure it out, maybe it's you that needs to "get a life." Or at least read and understand something before you get all snippy :)
And Pat, I'm sick of "just an old farm boy" too. He looks more foolish every time he opens his mouth. The sad thing is..I think we just might be stuck with him for the next few years. Very sad if it goes that way, but as we all know, money talks. And money just might be the deciding factor in this election. You said Kenny Murphy raised about $20,000.00? I assume he was elected?
Kathy, the figures I quoted are not mine. They are from The town of Payson. I did not mention the name of any pack, so how can you say I am misrepresenting the facts. Don Crowley had nothing to do with my post, as he is currently at the Mayo Clinic being treated for bone cancer.
Pat, kenny evans is his own campaign manager, but, his treasure handles the funds. With over 600 donations, it would be difficult for him to tell you who they all are. After the election, you may go to to Town Hall and get all of the names if it is that important for you to know. The answer to your question, "Does he think we are all idiots?" is NO!! As far as my not telling the truth, I never intentional tell a lie. I have admitted in the past that I have made some incorrect statements, of which you were so kind to point out, and I admitted that I stand corrected.
I meant that for Gordon, not you Pat. I'm looking at Kenny Who's Campaign Finance report filed in January. Very strange, and Gordon, I have heard Kenny Who say he is the treasurer.
As long as you have been stirring the political pot, you absolutely are aware that the candidates are required to file an ITEMIZED FORM each month with Sylvia at Town Hall, stating exactly how much money they have received and who gave it. You also know that these statements are actually filed a month after the month the money was given received.
So if Mr. Evans reports $25,000 on the current report, he received that much prior to January 1. Now that the campaign has begun, one wonders how much more has been poured into his campaign fund since that time.
The abbreviation of political action committee is P A C unless you are referring to a wolf pack or something else.
The financial report I'm looking at is from January, and Kenny Who signed as TREASURER.
Why is everyone acting so naive? Why the big secret? It's all a matter of public record, isn't it? If Kenny Who truly does not know what is going on in his campaign, he sure as hell doesn't need to be mayor.
Pat Come on Pat and get off your high horse. I have seen you and Dean say a lot of terrible things about people on here. If you or Edwards can't take a joke then don't read it. Hang in there Gordon the Pat and Dean show is rolling today. They hate to hear used car salesmen made fun of while they have been harassing people with negative comments and rumors for the four years I have been on here. No one knows anything but Pat and Dean. Dean you better send that to Edwards right away. After all this is a freedom of speech country and Edwards loves being in public life and the public arena and we can joke about him, laugh about him and make fun of him. He’s a big boy he can handle it. Ha The things you and several others on here have said about Pete Aleshire at the Round-up are much worse than my comment and Pete is not in politics.
Chief, You were lumping a group of people together. Attack one person at a time. There is one car salesman here in town that is an idiot and very rude, but all the rest have been very nice. Should I say all the car salesmen in Payson and Star Valley are idiots and rude?
As for Pete Aleshire, he is supposed to be reporting news not doing editorials or opinions. Isn't he?
Last night. Andy Rooney talked about the presidential campaign. His comment was, as I remember it, can anyone believe how early we all have gotten tired of the election. It seemed to hit HOME for me.
The mayorial race in Payson and the water wars in Pine Strawberry are sure geting old. The reason it is getting old is absolutely nothing as changed since the very first comment was made about either issue or by anyone commenting.
There is still a water company that can be bought for nothing or millions of dollars and Payson has a mayor who has done everything or nothing. All depending on the person telling the story.
Can't we all just get along? Perhaps it should read move along?
Pat You dont have to drive me around town,as Steve and I drive around a lot.We do it toget me out of the house as I don't drive any more. There are a few homes being built on the upper side of Sherwood, but they not for common people. There were a few by the Frontier School. .Have you noticed that Bison has not built any more condos,by town hall,as the ones he built have not sold. Also the Habitat ones by the school started, saw somw 2by4s up and now there gone..What happened to that?Heres how many have been issued this yr ,so you can see nothing is moving. The only way normal people can buy is in a subdivison as most buyers cannot afford the impact feesThose on top of the price of a lot and house put it out of most peoples reach. You cant keep a town solvant with these kind of numbers.
LATEST ACTIVITY: 'We issued 96 Single Family Permits, 16 Manufactured Home Permits and 18 Permits for Multi-Family Units In January 08 we issued one single family permit and four Manufactured Home Permits'
O.K. I have yet to see a car salesman with a white belt and white shoes. You must shop for different vehicles than I do. I buy from Redneck Salemen. I have been driving Ford F150 pickups since 1990 until Oct of last year when I got to old and crippled to get in them. No, not all pickup salesmen are Rednecks!
Pat I never said anyone is an idiot or rude. Those are your words. If there is one that fits your description then he is most likely wearing a white belt and white shoes. Get my point, we have all had dealing with them "the car is in perfect shape and runs so well" and then it is a pile of junk. Pat you on the back when they want something from you and after they get it, they don't even know you. Anyway I will not lump people together if it will make you feel better. Ok
I stand corrected. Pack is PAC. I agree that the amount of money spent on elections these days is ludicrous. That is why I brought up the amount the Edwards/Blair, and PAC's spent in the last election, which everyone seems to ignore as they deep fry Kenny Evans.
When I first moved to Payson it was rare when any candidate spent more than $6,000 to $7,000 during the entire campaign,
Pat,
Kenny has someone who is taking care of the funds for him as a volunteer. Regardless if he is officialy his own Campaign Manager, Treasurer, Janitor, and Window Washer, it would be impossible for him to know personaly the over 600 people who have donated to his campaign. I'm know he will find out who they are after the election, but right now he is like a one man band campaigning for the office of Mayor.
Gordon, You are being left out of the loop again. Mr. Evans signed his finance report certifying under penalty of perjury that he had examined the contents. And you are saying he doesn't know who donated. Give me a break. You gave $340.oo that is accounted for and Crowley gave $350.oo. I am sure he can't sit down and name all of them but he knows who the big contributors are... Don't try to BS someone who does their research.
I know you really want to be fair and balanced in your comments, so how about telling us how much the opponents of Mayor Edwards spent on the last campaign trying to keep him from winning the election.
If the numbers run true to form, the GOB groupies spent at least DOUBLE trying to keep their toadies seated. And of course, they did successfully stack the current council.
Looks like the Roundup fell for the confusing finanical report submitted by the Kenny Evans campaign. On the page for contributions less than $25, the report stated that 571 attendees at different meetings passed the hat to collect over $5700 in contributions. Was the campaign acutally able to count the numbers of people who contributed? Could some have contributed over the limit and not been properly tracked per campaign finance laws? Could some have contributed no money at all? But the Roundup believed that 571 actually contributed just because they attended a meeting.
Sheesh, what are ya'll so worked up about? The majority of election ballots were returned like a week ago. I believe anyone should be able to contribute any amount to any candidate they desire, period. Gordon, you are talking to a PACK above: a. A group of animals, such as dogs or wolves, that run and hunt together. b. A gang of people: a pack of hoodlums. c. An organized troop having common interests
Don, You may believe a person should be able to contribute however much they want to, but that is not the law. As an ex police officer where is your thinking? Did you only enforce the laws you liked?
Aleshire is at it again. Must have been a slow news week. As long as he was doing an analysis of funds, I wonder if he noticed some of the $20.oo donations where you don't have to put your employment there were some more Realtors? Did anyone notice the contribution from one of the Roundup employees? Maybe some more of them were at the meetings when the hat was passed.
Pat, to truthfully answer your question. Yes. There were some laws I tended to avoid enforceing if at all possible, as they were virtualy ignored by the city/county attorney and a hassle of paperwork and time involvement. Others I had a personal glee in enforceing. Any LEO who tells you different is, well, looking to promote and would'nt want to po his/her superiors or phony. And Dean, be nice, it's only politics.
Since I'm not there to observe where was the meeting with 571 people in attendance and the hat was passed? That is a very large meeting - maybe a seminar of a district meeting to endorse a candidate or ??????
Not many churches pick up that kind of money by passing an offering plate so it must be really special . Was the meeting specified on the report? Sure seems like it should be.
Marylou, Back to your post of a couple of days ago. According to your figures of building permits they still have 135 to go. I don't know if you read my post about the subdivision across the street from Center for Success school, but a contrators or contractors started homes in there then walked out. There are to many homes for sale now. When I started looking 3 years ago for a smaller home, there were 52 listings in Payson. Someone got a big price for thier house and everyone decided to get on the band wagon and make a fortune. They are priced to high to sell. On the street where I moved from there are 5 houses for sale. It is a short street. In Stonecreek off Longhorn there are at least 10 houses for sale. I think the people are dreaming about the prices they are asking.
Why is the bunch so concerned about the financial reports? Looks to me there is a lot more to worry about then who has the most money, and like Don said ,it is probably almost over, by the amount of votes that have been turned in.You guys could do better worrying about some of the importment things, like the event cnter,YMCA and the Mud Springs road (ha Ha by-pass)This election is about over, so now why dont you concerate on the feds. You cant do anything about that one either, except gripe.
2007 130 new home permits that all 120 short of 250 in 2007 2008 5 by end of January so that leaves 245 left for this year may name is Steve and i take her where she wants to go anytime. And we come to town about 5 to 7 times a week or more we drive all over town and it is dead.
Steve, Don't get so hostile, I knew you when you were a baby and called you Stevie. Sorry. You have no sense of humor, after I asked how often you let her out, there was a smiley face and I also wrote joke. I am sure your mother was not offended. I know the real estate is dead because everyone is trying to double the price on what they paid for thier house. When they are priced reasonable they should sell within 60 days at the most. Yes, I know what I am talking about. I was a Realtor for almost 23 years in Mesa.
Pat.He figured you were joking, and even though he works for he state he has a pretty good sense of humor. We drive around a lot, and there hasnt been a street in this town that we havent been on,so we know that over half the town is up for saleSome of them are trying to make money on the homes, but a lot of the people have left due to no work. I guess we'll just have to get Obama here to fix things. When he gets to be Pres,he going to take charge and no one will have to worry about health ins, jobs or mortgages.Hes going to give gov't help to everyone despite the fact that it will make taxes go up Good Job..
Marylou, I received an email today with the funniest picture in it. Wish I knew how to send it to everyone talking about affordable housing or put it on here. I am going to take one to Town Hall. It came from Chicago from someone I have never met but he reads this website and would love to move here.
I have a friend in Phx. that is the same age as Pete (55) and he gets upset when I call him Jackie. He wants to be called Jack. No matter how old they get, they seem to get stuck with the names from when they were little kids. If anyone called Pete by his real name, Ronald, he wouldn't know they were talking to him.

Who's whining Marylou? I'm not whining, I'm just trying to point something out. And you missed the point completely.

Posted by thechief (Chief Hinton) on March 2, 2008 at 4:52 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Dean
I am not whinning about by task force but several others had the same problem.

Shovelhead,
I heard of Marcy's kids when she was working for the Town when I first moved back here. She has been in the newspapers, on the radio, and national TV.
Mr. Evans seems to be such a do gooder and helps get everything done, I thought it strange he had never heard of them.

Ruby,
I know a lot of people think the LDS (Mormon) church has the Bishop stand up and say, "this is who to vote for." Not so!

You contine to say the Committee for Community Based Growth used it funds to support a candidate. This is not true and you know it. Those funds were used for legal and administrative costs to complete the referendum against the Tower Well. No matter how many times you misrepresent the facts it will not make them true.

Our community priorities are screwed up. More money is spent trying to become mayor of Payson than goes to things that need it the most. I think something is very wrong here, I don't care who it is raising the money. It seem Town politics is more important to some people than it should be.

I dont know how many times you have told me I am missing the point. What is the point?I have lived here a lot longer then you have, and I just dont see a point that I'm missing, regarding Edwards.
Pat
I didn't hear about Marcy's Kids for a long time and I have been back 25yrs,and no my heqd is not buried in the sand.

I think the question was did the people that contribute to Evans give to the non profits.
Put the blame where it belongs, high impact fees, the developers and contractors
I can say that as my son and grandsons are building contractors.

If I was like many of the other people on here, I would ask that your post ending with the crack about used car salesmen be removed.

Posted by Gordon_Metcalf (Gordon Metcalf) on March 3, 2008 at 9:37 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Pat & Kathy,
Kathy, the figures I quoted are not mine.

Gordon,
As long as you have been stirring the political pot, you absolutely are aware that the candidates are required to file an ITEMIZED FORM each month with Sylvia at Town Hall, stating exactly how much money they have received and who gave it.

Come on Pat and get off your high horse. Ha

His
comment was, as I remember it, can anyone believe how early we all have gotten tired of the election.

You dont have to drive me around town,as Steve and I drive around a lot.We do it toget me out of the house as I don't drive any more.

Ruby,
I stand corrected.

You gave $340.oo that is accounted for and Crowley gave $350.oo.
I am sure he can't sit down and name all of them but he knows who the big contributors are...

Ruby,
As usual a mistake was made by someone !
38 meetings--571 attendees--small pass the hat contributions--average of $10.18 per attendee
I typed the above exactly as it was on the financial report of Evans,
under number 4 Aggregate total of contributions of $25 or less.
If you believe the amounts at those meetings as reported, I know where there are two lonely green houses on Longhorn I will sell you for
$500.oo (:

Marylou,
Back to your post of a couple of days ago.

I received an email today with the funniest picture in it.
