Hello All: A bit of good news. Payson High's Mark McCarty has been selected as a Flinn Scholar. The Flinn Scholarship is designed to keep the brightest and best in Arizona for their college Education. Over 580 top notch students vie for 20 scholarships that include tuition, books, housing, summer travel and internships, stipend and individual attention worth approximately $140,000 over four years. Mark is the third Payson student to receive this prestigious award. The first was Niki Hale in 1987. Nineteen years later Beryl Jones in 2006 and two years after that, Mark McCarty. I firmly believe we have a couple more future Flinn's walking on our campus right now! In the last three years our community and schools have produced numerous honors including Michael Daniels-National Merit Scholar, Beryl Jones-Flinn Scholar, Isaac Cluff-West Point appointment, Stephanie Hilliard-Stanford Engineering, Aspen Gorry-University of Chicago Ph.D., University of Arizona President's cup for highest collective grade point average and many others I'm sure I've missed. I am proud of my staff and the support and education they have given these students. My "hat's off" as well to their parents who supported and encouraged their children. I see this success as only the beginning of what we will accomplish.
Mr. Sandoval, I am glad to hear good things about students, but you are giving all the credit to the school and your teachers and the parents. Your heading to this is 'Another Honor for Payson High School.' Couldn't you have added the word Student? Mark must have worked very hard for this. I do not know him but I am proud of him. It didn't just happen to him because of the teachers.
I know I will get flak over this post but I really don't care. Give some credit where it is due. The student Mark who worked for it.
