I cannot believe the article Mr. Foster wrote in Friday's paper.
I am so tired of hearing that the kids in Payson have nothing to do and the all powerful Mayor.
First, the mayor has one vote. When are you all going to get that thru your thick heads. The Mayor is not against the YMCA he doesn't want to give up park land for them to build on. That is the way I understand it.
I am not numbering the rest just go with it.
We have a public pool at Rumsey Park. There is a pool at the Reservation that is open to the public. If you get your H.S. diploma you should have picked up a little job training from school. The charter school I believe has job training. Isn't the DARE program about drug abuse prevention? Educational classes are supposed to be taught in the schools. How many more team sports leagues do we need and what happens to the ones we have if the YMCA comes in and takes over?
If the YMCA is not afraid of failing here, let them to out and buy land.
The rodeo grounds was moved because of noise and traffic once a year and the people who moved near it complained. What are they going to say about all the traffic, kids and noise with the YMCA being built there? There are already all the ball fields, softball, soccer, football, tennis courts, and skateboards at Rumsey.
All of you people that want to get a warm fuzzy feeling being do gooders with someone elses money. get over it.

Darn, when something really gets to me I hit the send button to soon.
Was the article really about the YMCA or was it another slam at the Mayor as his name was in the first sentence?
It is about time we had leadership instead of an open bank account for everyone's private agendas. The town should take care of town problems, streets, police dept. fire dept. drainage and sidewalks. Not be baby sitters and entertainment centers.
We have raised three kids, had 5 businesses and no one but a bank helped us,at a high intrest rate.
There are way to many non-profit corporations that are nothing but so called do gooders that want thier names and pictures in the paper. It would be interesting to know just how much of thier personal money goes into all the wonderful ideas they come up with.

What good is the public pool, Pat? It costs too much for most to use on a regular basis. Some time ago, they did away with family and single passes. Don't know whether it was this past summer, the summer before, or both, but they were closed on Sunday. Why?
The “Y” isn't asking the town for anything, except the leasing of some land. Far as I'm concerned, Rumsey seems the ideal place for it.

Pat, I've always respected Max Foster, his articles and his contributions to the school system, but this article shines a whole new light on him. He has obviously jumped on the band wagon to discredit Bob Edwards, and you are so right! Bob Edwards is not against the ymca!! He's against putting it on Town Park property. And Foster's article wasn't about the YMCA, it was about a political agenda. I thought he was above that kind of thing.
I have an idea about a much better location for the YMCA, how about letting them build on the Middle/High School property? There's a lot of property there just growing weeds, give it to the YMCA. Or get a task force together or form a “Friends of the YMCA,” and help find a piece of land for them. Don't expect the Town to provide for them. They don't give five acres to other non-profits, do they?
And I am so fed up with the “Nothing for the kids to do.” How many businesses have opened up just for kids, and gone belly up in a very short time?
Foster doesn't need to politicize this issue, which is exactly what he did. If he's in favor of a YMCA, fine, so am I! So is Bob Edwards! But I don't expect the Town to just hand over a place to put it. And I don't believe we “owe” it to the kids in Payson. If they can't find enough to do, that's their problem, not mine, and it's not up to the Town either. There is enough to do to keep them busy during school, after school, weekends, summer vacation, just do it!

Susan, one of the reasons the pools are having to close as much as they do is because they can't find enough lifeguards.
The same problem the Y will have if they build here.

Why not build it on historic main street. Parents could drop the kiddies off while they shop for antiques!

I wonder if the “Y” will offer batting practice, or pee wee golf, or have an arcade? Hope not, those already went belly up!

The idea of putting the YMCA on Main is great. The mention of needing something to attract young people to that area was in the paper just last week and what better than a Y? It could be designed to fit in with the old west theme (is that what they're using this week?) - like a big ranch house, a saloon or Miss Kitty's house and just might be a winner.
The fact that this is a special interest of the “Friends of the Library” and the Friends of the Parks” should be something of a warning. Beware of friends who approach with hands out - it always costs far more than they tell you.
Riverwalk YMCA. Has a nice ring to it,

I don't think most of the kids in Payson care a bit about Main. If we're talking about kids using the Y, I think they'd be more likely to use it in Rumsey. They could go there straight from either the middle school or high school.
The pool at the reservation: If my kids were still young, I wouldn't want to drive them out there to swim. Further, I wouldn't allow them to ride their bikes or walk there. I imagine that there are lots of other parents who feel the same way.

What is wrong with going to the inside pool at the Reservation?
Help the Tribe, they have probably brought more money into town in the last 8 yrs than anyone else.
If I remember right they also paid for most of the new track at the HS if not all of it.

llandproud,
It is closer to Main St. than Rumsey from the schools. Why would they be more likely to use the Y if it is at Rumsey, if they don't use what is there now?
The reservation is one place in town that has a sidewalk on the highway. On both sides most of the way.
Ruby was commenting on an article that was in the paper about needing something on Main for the kids, weren't you Ruby?
There were three boys using the brick sidewalk at the Pioneer Park about a month ago for skateboard riding. To bad Mr. Wolfe didn't see it as he wanted the brick effect so they couldn't ride there. (:

llandproud,
Do you think the pool at the Y will be free?

No, Pat, I don't. If, however, there is a monthly fee, as mentioned in an earlier post about the matter (on another thread), it would be cheaper than $2/person/swim at the public pool.
Are the middle school and high school really closer tor Main than to Rumsey? I don't know, but I do think the high school is closer to Rumsey.
No one knows how much use the Y would get from kids or adults. It's a risk that the YMCA seems to be willing and able to take.

I think it is Payson that is taking the risk, letting them have $2 million worth of land.
