I thought you might be interested in discussing the article in the paper that PHS had the highest ACT (American College Testing) scores since 2003. This is pretty positive news. Not only were the scores much higher than the state and nation, a much higher percentage of students took the test. It is a good sign.

1 Don't all the students in a particular grade have to take the test?
2 Or is it the students choice?
3 Did they have special instruction before the test?
Yes, I am the pessimist. (:
If the answer to questions 2 and 3 are no hooray for the kids.

Pat, it is not required that high school students take either the ACT or SAT. Colleges (4-yr) and universities require them for admittance.

There are, I'm sure, special books or computer studies that the students can use before taking the tests, but that would be done by the student on his/her own time.

I remember very well taking the ACT (in 1970), which was the required test for admittance to Kansas University. I didn't do any special preparation for the test.

I am wondering what percentage of the class of 2007 took the ACT. Mr. Sandavol said that more students took it this time, and I am wondering how much of an increase we saw.

This is indeed good news. It is so exciting to see students actually taking charge and caring about such things as their future.

Sorry, I did look in the article for the information, and I didn't find it. I could have missed it.

llandproud,
Do you realize the DiamondBacks are playing ball? You aren't supposed to be on here. (:

Pat, it's now 11:13pm. My earlier post was actually BEFORE 7pm and before the game started. I was killing a few minutes before the game began.

D'backs lead the series 2-0. Woo Hoo!

llandproud,
I wish they would get thier clock fixed on here and keep the posts in order but I guess that is asking to much. (: Oh well it is free.

Pat, first, let me point out that there is not a D'backs game today. ; - )

Second, maybe we should just make it a habit of typing the time at the beginning of our posts. For instance, the time for your post says 10:47am. In fact, it is just now 10:17.

So, at 10:17, now 10:18am, I am posting this comment. ; - )

llandproud,
It is going to be boring. I love to watch Valverde when he pitches, and
I think the DB manager is the sexiest man in baseball. (: 10:55

Pat, makes me nervous when Valverde comes into the game - so much drama! But, I do love it.

Bob Melvin is the Manager of the Year.

Cubs? What Cubs?

In all seriousness, it's scary that we (D'backs) will likely be facing the Rockies for the NL championship. Rockies are really good and have had our number this year.

Time - 11:24am

No Pat, Steve at Town Hall is the sexiest man in the universe. :) So that trumps baseball. Doesn't it? 11:40 am

C'mon Girls,
I am speaking of sexy men in baseball. One of the announcers said something one night about sexiest ball player or something to that effect.
Bob Melvin just has something about him !!!!!
Have you noticed Valverde never looks at the batters face or bats an eye when the camera does the closeup on him when he is getting ready to throw the ball? He is a little spooky but one heck of a closer.

Sorry Mr. Sandoval,
We can't stay on track.

Posted by llandproud (Susan Grubbs) on October 5, 2007 at 1:09 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Yes, Pat. I know. : -)

I hadn't noticed that about Valverde, but I'll watch for it. He is the best closer in baseball right now, that's for sure. Makes me nervous, but he is the best.

Posted by patrandall (pat Randall) on October 5, 2007 at 4:20 p.m. (Suggest removal)

He really made me nervous the night he hit the first batter and walked the second one.
I can't remember now who won that game. Old age is hell.

Pat, your last statement made me laugh out loud. All I can say is, boy, ain't that the truth!

llandproud,
You ain't old yet, remember I have a son your age.
I think maybe some of his antics aged me prematurely.(:

By the way, we have permission today to release that Payson High School was determined by the state Arizona Learns criteria to be "highly performing" for the second year in a row. The designations are: Failing, under performing, performing, performing plus, highly performing and excelling. The determinations are based upon student achievement data on the AIMS and graduation rates with a requirement on the percentage of students tested to ensure that schools don't leave kids out.
Of course no one factor can accurately determine a school's performance but, when you look at several factors such as the aforementioned ACT scores, coupled with the "highly performing two year's running" designation, along with the lower discipline referral rate etc. you get a sketch or how things might be going. My hat's off to my staff and the many supportive parents and community members. Also to the many students who work hard.
On a final note, for further information on the school designations, today's Arizona Republic spends considerable ink on it. Lot's of "failing" and "under performing" schools out there!
