when teachers assign students to write letters to the editor, are they graded on what and how they are written or do they even read them?
I was reading one last week and the second paragraph makes no sense with what the rest of the letter is saying. What does low income housing have to do with the kid having thoughts about falling behind in thier classes?
I do not believe there are any homeless children in Payson. If there are any someone from the town should be looking into what kind of parents they have.
If Payson doesn't have anywhere to live the families should move some where they can make more money and there are more apts.
It is not up to the Town to build living quarters for people. If they do that, the rest of us pay for your home with our taxes.
Our first home was a 24' trailer house with no bathroom. We had to live in trailer parks where they had restrooms with showers. It didn't hurt us a bit.
My husband worked on road construction and we had to move quite often, so our first two homes had wheels that were never removed. His pay was a $1.93 an hour.

Pat, if memory serves, this is the second time you've started a thread about the letters to the editor by 8th graders. Also, if memory serves, I suggested before that you contact the teachers with your questions about them.

I know that my son had to write such a letter. Don't remember what subject he chose, or how it was graded. I believe that the purpose may be to teach kids about civic involvement. It isn't so much about what they write, but the fact that they are thinking about what they think might make the community better.

Now, as to whether or not the letters or portions of them make sense, I can tell you that I often feel the same way about letters written by adults.

llandproud,
You can make suggestions all day if you like. I do not have to take them.
You are not a higher authority !
You are right about adults letters not making sense.
If the letters are supposed to make the kids think about civic involvement, from what I have read it isn't working. A little research on what they are writing about would help.
It is like when the HS kids are required to make a report on a council meeting. They come in pick up an agenda, sit for 5 minutes, leave and write a report about what happened at the meeting.
I have seen parents bring them in and the same thing happens.
Of course now they can turn on TV and watch.

Did someone get up on the wrong side of the bed?

Pat, have you ever considered
ANGER MANAGEMENT classes?

shovelhead,
I believe it was llandproud who got up on the wrong side of the bed.
I posted last night.
As I said I don't need or have to follow her suggestions. So there. (:
llandproud and I have disagreed before and also have agreed on a lot of things. I just thought she was a little snippy.
You are the only person who has ever asked that question. Was that your Dr. question?
I am not an angry person. I just say what I think, and if someone doesn't like it, tough. I try not to say anything to deliberately hurt anyone's feelings or make fun of anyone. Once again, no one is forced to respond to me on here.
When people talk to me face to face, I really don't have to say much as my expressions more or less let them know what I am thinking.
Have a nice day.

Pat, trust me. I didn't get up on the wrong side of the bed. I read what you wrote and responded. I've re-read my post and don't think it sounds the least bit testy. Fact is, Pat, you have brought the subject up before. You didn't like a letter then, either. I really do think that, if the letters are that much of a mystery or concern to you, then talk to the teachers who assign them.

If there is a final authority on the subject, that would be the teacher (or teachers) who assign the letters.

Pat... lay back ...listen to the sound of my keyboard...think of a happy place..

IF YOU CAN REMEMBER A HAPPY PLACE!

Posted by patrandall (pat Randall) on September 18, 2007 at 2:50 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Shovelhead,
When you have 3 kids, 5 grandkids, 6 great grandkids, a great husband and had a loving extended family growing up, and many friends you can remember many happy places.
When you have lost most of your extended family, a lot of old dear friends, have a lot of sickness with present family members there are many sad places also. Not angry, sad.
My daughter got home today from being in the heart hospital in Mesa after having another small heart attack. Not like the big one she had 7 yrs ago.
Two things make me angry, liars and stupid.

llandproud,
There have been many things brought up on here more than once.

I forgot one thing. I have the greatest little dog in the world.
His name is George and he is 15 yrs old. Another sad day coming up with him.

Pat, you miss the point. It isn't that you've started the thread more than once. It is that it obviously bothers you that the 8th graders have this assignment. I see two possible options: Complain at the school, or ignore them.

llandproud,
You are assuming I missed your point. I really didn't care.

OUCH,
NOW THAT WAS SNIPPY!

No "ouch' here, shovelhead. I'll just remember not to make suggestions to Pat. Seems to upset her.

Shovelhead,
I meant it that way. I don't like people assuming things.
I take suggestions a lot of times, but they are like advice, better when asked for.
I was more or less wondering if anyone else had an opinion on the letters. Maybe I asked the questions wrong.

Posted by llandproud (Susan Grubbs) on September 18, 2007 at 9:55 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Pat, had I said, "I think you should contact the teachers," that would have been advice. Now, maybe, since you take things so personally, I should have said, "maybe you could call the school to find out the answers to your questions."

If you really wonder what others think of the students' letters to the editors, I happen to get a kick out of them. I like reading how the kids see life in Payson. I like the requirement for students to write, whether it be a letter to the editor or a book report. It helps them organize their thoughts. It requires use of proper grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and correct spelling. In my opinion, not enough writing is required. Lastly, I read the letters knowing that many, if not most, of these kids would rather not have to write them at all.

llandproud,
I still say advice and suggestions are appreciated if asked for.
I do wonder what other people think of the letters.
If you read the letter I was talking about the thoughts didn't seem to go together. My opinion.
I know my thoughts run all over the place on here, but I am not writing a school assignment.
I don't think the teachers have the time to answer phone calls from someone who doesn't have a child in school even tho I pay school taxes. Yes, there have been some very good letters to the editor by students.
I agree not enough writing is done by students. I know I hated book reports. Love to read, but didn't want to write a report. I think penmanship should be brought back. If it is being taught, there must be many failing grades. I have two grandsons that I can't even read thier names.
If I took things personally, I would be in tears half of the time and I wouldn't post on here. See you are assuming again. (:
